pH meter

The pH meter is essential in laboratories to measure the pH of solutions. Accuracy is key for pH measurements and sometimes, pH measurement and adjustment can take a long time & easily made inaccurate when it is faulty &/or mishandled. ⠀

Here are some important tips to note while using the pH meter:⠀
1) Handle with care: The electrode/probe consists of a glass bulb that is very fragile. Do not use it to stir the solution you are measuring. If a magnetic stirrer is used during pH measurement, prevent breakage by maintaining a distance between the stirrer and the electrode.⠀
2) Calibration: Aliquot a fresh batch of pH standard from the solution bottle for every calibration to ensure no contamination in the solution bottles. ⠀
3) Cleaning: Rinse the electrode with distilled water above a clean waste beaker and blot with Kimwipe to remove moisture before use. Avoid rubbing or wiping as it may scratch the glass membrane, removing the hydrated layer, resulting in inaccuracy due to static charge. ⠀
4) Storage: Always keep the electrode hydrated & store it in 3 or 4M Potassium Chloride Solution (KCl) (depending on manufacturer's instruction).⠀
5) Temperature: The pH measurement is highly dependent on the temperature. Calibrate and measure pH at the same temperature to ensure accuracy.⠀
