Suspension cell culture
In cell culture, there are two systems for growing cells, one where cells are grown as a monolayer (aka adherent cell culture) and the other where cells are free-floating in the culture medium (aka suspension culture). The suspension culture requires agitation (e.g. shaking in shaker flask) for adequate gas exchange! The speed of shaking affects the growth of these cells, too high a speed causes shear stress on the cells, resulting in cell damage!
